Fleet & PDP Driver Sensitization

What is Driver Sensitization ?

Definition:

As a verb; when you sensitize people to a particular problem or situation, you make them aware of it.

Meaning in short:

Understanding and contemplating the needs, requirements or constraints of passengers with disabilities and then to be integrated permanently into the drivers' behavioral repertoires.

More detail...

Generally being a passenger with disabilities, transportation is a daunting task. Drivers need to possess the ability to control the vehicle accordingly and adapt their driving skills as to accommodate passengers with disabilities and their needs.

Transferring passengers from their wheelchair to a vehicle seat has a unique set of aspects to consider whilst transporting passengers seated in their own wheelchair poses a different approach instead.

Some passengers might not want you to touch their legs (wheelchair), while others might want all the help they can get. Understanding what it pertain to be disabled or wheelchair bound, a rather educated approach should be taken towards the safety and comfort of passengers with disabilities.

Certain driving skills should also be adopted. Skills like driving slower over speed bumps because it feels much worse when seated in a wheelchair or if users experience pain from shock. Another is the planning of maneuvering- or parking at angled roads, rainy days or to gain adequite wheelchair access...

Whatever weird scenario may arise, as a driver, you can only be properly prepared when sensitized!

Who need this training ?

Public Transport Drivers

'Public Transport' is probably the most important sector to have adequitly trained drivers. As a bussiness, you not only reduce risks greatly, you are equipped to give the best service to your customers!

If you drive a bus, taxi, shuttle, chauffeur service or company personnel carrier; you might as well fall under 'Public Transport'. When serving the public, it is essential to maintain the highest level of safety. When transporting passengers with disabilities, a 'next level' approach is needed.

Not only to comply with vehicle safety standards, but any passenger that "feels" unsafe for that matter, already put you at risk.

On the other hand, happy passengers = pleasant environment = happy bussiness.

Personnel Carrier Drivers

Although this can also be 'Public Transport' related, more focus is put on the driving skills itself. Since the passengers (colleagues) is usually known to the driver, disabilities are already understood.

Chauffeurs

Although this can also be 'Public Transport' related, training will focus more on dealing with various disabilities and their needs than with driving. Is'nt chauffeurs gracious drivers anyway?

Driving School Trainers/Tutors

This is an exciting course to aid driving schools with disabled driver training and to 'up' their service even more. Delegates will learn: sensitization, system setup integration, evaluation of cognitive- and motor neuron responses.

Caretakers or Driver Helpers

Caretakers are the 'helpers' for disabled individuals within a family or group-organization environment.

Chances are that vehicles is adapted or have advanced conversion systems installed. Caretakers and/or drivers need to know how these devices are operated, maintained and must know what to do in case of failure or in emergency scenarios.

Hospitallity- Services and Personnel

Understanding the needs of disabled customers is the receipe for superior service. Delegates will learn to be professional and sensitive with every customer.

Levels of Certification :

Compulsory Certification (Pre-Level)

Prior to enrolling for the sensitization programme, an 'Advanced and Defensive Driving Certificate' is manditory, except for chauffeurs, driving school trainers, caretakers and hospitallity personnel.

However, it is recommended that all drivers driving for bussiness should do such a course.
