Standards Development & Directives

Why is standards development nescessary ?

It is important to know that standards can be in the form of voluntary compliance or made compulsory by law, although marketplace pressure usually mandates compliance.

Having said that, the main reason for standards development is to protect the consumer. Us humans have the ability to create wonderful things in this world, but we also have the ability to make a proper mess from it at times. No person think exactly like another and neither are everybody engineers. People have different experiences and exposures to various factors in life. Therefore, to safeguard the consumer, certain standards will be made compulsory by law, obviously as products evolve over time. Voluntary standards would be like for manufacturers to comply to guidelines w.r.t certain criteria to address a certain level of quality, interoperability or added safety features built into their products.
